Alghero

Alghero
Alghero is an old Sardinian village, situated on the Western coast of the Island.

Alghero faces the sea from which it gets its name. A fortified city that has numerous towers and ancient walls from the 5th century.Geographically, it is in a valuable position within the Natural Park of Porto Conte and the Marine reserve of Capo Caccia - Island of Piana. The historical centre with its architecture and suggestive alley- ways, is like a small jewel embedded in the land of Sardinia. Its origins according to tradition go back to the beginning of the 12th century when it was founded by the Noble Genovese family of Doria.

It was then conquered by the Aragon’s and Catalan’s and today it still preserves these influences in both speech and traditions. It is one of the most important borough’s within the Mediterranean for its historical and archaeological testimony.

Due to this position of Mediterranean city, the Alghero council from 1998, in partnership with ISPROM (institute of projects and studies for the Mediterranean )and in agreement with ICOMOS –CIVVIH (the International committee of villas and historical towns) permanently holds the The Historical Cities Of The Mediterranean Conference. This organisation has gathered the membership of numerous small, historical towns that overlook the shores of this great sea.

At the beginning of this enterprise a significant number of projects were started one being the Faculty of Mediterranean Architecture in collaboration with the universities of the Balearic Islands and those of Corsica.
