Asinara is an important area for the reproduction of wild fauna...
on the island around 80 wild species of fauna reproduce, and of these many, hold scientific relevance for their rarity on a world-wide scale.
In the amphibians we find the Discoglosso Sardo, the Smeraldino toad and the Raganella. In the reptiles we find 11 species, of which the communal Testuggine and the Viperina snake. Of the marine birds, noted for importance we have the "Gabbiano corso", the "Marangone dal ciuffo", the "Berta maggiore and minore", the "Pernice sarda"; the Island is also the only Sardinian station where we find the Gazza. For the last few years the Island has a program of ringing the birds in order to study the migration habits of the "Gabbiano reale". The mammals on the Island include hare, weasel, sheep, wild boar, horses and the characteristic white donkey.
The local vegetation is typical of this part of the Mediterranean with Lentisco, Euforea Arborea, Colicotome, narrow leaf Filirea, Ginepro Fenicio and Cisto. There is also a forest of Holm Oaks that covers an area of nearly 6 hectares situated in the area of Elighe Mannu (on the Western side of the Island, of scientific interest is the jagged coastline, with its associated vegetation.
From 1995 the” Foreste Demaniali” Company is reforesting the area of Eligihe Mannu.
