Asinara, for its dimensions is the second Sardinian Island after Sant’Antioco
It is narrowly shaped, long in the direction from North to South, with a jagged coastline housing a notable variety of habitat.
The flora of Asinara is made up of 678 different species ( of which roughly 113 officially accounted for in the whole of Sardinia) of these 678; 616 are spontaneous with 45 being introduced. In general the flora has the Mediterranean characteristics and is represented by more than 50% of "terofite", annuals that are able to survive the unfavourable season (summer) in their seed state.
The "endemiche" species that on the whole characterise from the "fitogeografico" point of view an area, are 29 and represent around 5% of the general flora. Some of these are exclusive to Eastern Sardinia for example Centaurea Horrida, Limonium Acutifolium, Limonium Laetum, and others from the Sardo-Corsa region for example Astragalus Terracianoi and Erodium Corsicum.
The marine environment for Asinara is a valuable asset and of great scientific interest and substantially characterises a wholeness and variety of the flora-fauna community. Giving a notable value to the landscape and an excellent quality of water in ecologic terms.
