The Asinara National Park, was established in 1997 and is open all the year round.
There are guided tours and the guide will take you to all accessible areas. No more than 300 people a day are allowed to visit the Island, and in some of the protected areas it is forbidden to swim or dive, thus preserving the marine habitat.
Asinara was named by the Romans Herculis Insula, whilst during the middle ages , in the 18th century it was known as Azenara or Asenara, then later during the Renaissance period was called Sinnara or Sinuaria .Evidently there have always been donkeys on the Island, even if they were not albino’s.
The island of Asinara covers 52 square km. it is 17,5 km. long, and reaches 6,4 km. at its maximum width : geographically it is divided into 4 mountainous areas with the highest tip of Scomunica reaching 408m.a road travels from North to South and is 23km. long. The Western part is characterised by tall FALESIA SCISTOSE, numerous long, narrow canals and clefts. The Western part has numerous coves and small granitic beaches.
